Short weekly reflections on design, making and craft.

The paradox of craft

Hand-crafted objects are a luxury. Ironically though, craft was born out of necessity, emphasising practicality and utility. Contemporary craft, however, is different. It is about emotion, meaning, symbolism, status, and ethics.

Consumers desire objects that align with their values and these are often reflected in crafted objects. Yet bespoke, ethically hand-crafted objects come with the highest of costs, making them fundamentally unattainable for most.
