Australian Wood Review

(2023) Australian Wood Review Magazine, Issue 119, Pages 56-59.

I authored an article for Australian Wood Review about Design and simplicity.

In a creative context, our natural inclination for grand gestures can be precarious. Addition is easier than subtraction, frequently resulting in too much design. Simple design is often overlooked or mistaken for something lacking. It represents however, a great sophistication, distilling complexity into something beautifully minimal.

The Canberra Times

(2015) Capital Life: What's on in Canberra's arts scene from October 17

Ever looked at a piece of furniture and wondered how it was designed? Wonder no longer. The Gallery of Australian Design's latest exhibition Process shows the work behind emerging designer/maker Luke Batten's pieces. The finished products are revealed but the process underpinning their creation is also on display. From idea to production, audiences are invited to explore and reflect upon the development method unique to each product. Rather than just being a means to an end the hands-on exhibition is said to subtly suggest that the process is an art-form in its own right. Batten works with wood to craft unique objects investigating "material, structures and function". Process is on at the Gallery of Australian Design, Kingston until October 28.
