Short weekly reflections on design, making and craft.

References

References are physical geometry that help facilitate specific production processes.

Affording a level of control and certainty, references are fundamental to working wood.

A reference might be a knife line, a drawing, a parallel face, or a jig. Typically, though, references enable the accurate presentation of a tool to a component or assist with the presentation of a component to a specific machine.

During production, references are gained and lost. Therefore, a sequential list of processes is essential, ensuring each successive process has a sufficient reference.
